When I was preparing for my morning run today at 6:00am, I opened the sliding doors that take me to my outdoor patio to let my dog out for his early morning duty and was greeted by a wall of hot humid air. It was already 80 degrees and the humidity had to be close to 100%. The dog even hesitated before he headed out. Wow – I knew the weather forecast said to expect temperatures as high as 102 degrees today but I didn't think it would be that warm at 6:00am! Clearly, I had to take it easy and adjust my original plan so I shaved a ½ mile off my usual easy run and brought the pace down a bit – averaging about a 10:00 minute mile. As I was running, my usual self-chatter was accompanied by the buzzing of the locusts who were out in full force, chanting their pleasure or displeasure, whatever it might be. I'm not sure if the locusts were rejoicing in the heat or if they were begging for relief.
By the end of my 5.05 mile run, I was drenched and glad that it was behind me. Now, it was time to tackle the rest of the day. And, remembering to stay hydrated for the rest of the day.
Yes, the dog days of summer are here. I'll reflect on these days next January when we are housebound due to the snow and dressed in layers to stay warm.
Safe Running Friends!
John
